TypeOrganisationDate Range1922- PresentDescriptionThe Shetland Society of Wellington is an incorporated society with a focus on Shetland. The basis of membership to the society comes from being born there, family connection or a plain interest.
The Society has a long and busy history formed in 1922 by a group of Shetland Islanders who had left their homeland and settled in New Zealand, with many coming to live in the greater Wellington region.
Within Wellington the majority were involved in maritime activities linked to the busy port of Wellington and Island Bay on the south coast and its flourishing fishing community in the 1920s.
As the years have passed the focus of the Socety has shifted as the flow of immigrants from Shetland has diminished. While the society is still active in organizing many functions throughout the year and in keeping in touch with its members they try to provide information about Shetland to a wider group of New Zealanders.Internal StructuresGoverned by a committee which is elected at the Annual General Meeting each year.
