Built in 1874 by Stephen & Sons, Glasgow for The Harbour Steam Company, owned by James Mills, the SS Bruce was the first ship built for the Union Steam Ship Company and was a Steam Sailer.

In 1875 she was transferred to the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, but was wrecked at Taiaroa Head, Otago on 17 October 1875.
