The Hinemoa was built in 1946 for the Union Steam Ship Company (USSCo) by Vickers Armstrong Ltd. at Barrow in Furness for the Steamer Express service. It was the first ship in the post-war rebuilding project and served on the Wellington-Lyttelton service replacing the TSS Wahine, and was a Twin Screw Turbo-Electric.
Eventually, the growth of roll-on/roll-off cargo services made the Hinemoa redundant, and the ship was laid up for sale in 1966. From 1967-1971 the Hinemoa was renamed the George H. Evans and was used a floated power station at Bell Bay, Tasmania and Dampier in Western Australia.
In 1971, the ship was sold for scrap to Fuji Morden & Co Ltd in Hong Kong.
