The Kaimiro I was built in 1929 by Cammell Laird & Company of Birkenhead for the Union Steam Ship Company. It was the sistership to Karepo, and both were built primarily as self-trimming colliers used for coal, timber and bulk cargoes. They included three holds, six hatches and twelve cargo winches.
Kaimiro I helped with salvage of the Greek flagged steamer, Kotor, which went ashore near North Cape on 27 June 1944. The Company ship, Kiwitea, three navy ships and an Auckland Harbour Board tug also assisted with the salvage, which was successful.
Both ships were sold in 1954 to R.W. Miller & Co. Pty Ltd Sydney and Kaimiro was renamed Branxton. In 1969 it was sold to Goldfield Metal Traders of Freemantle and was delivered to Sydney for demolition. However, it was instead towed by tug to Hong Kong where it was broken up by Ming Hing & Co.
