Built in 1937 by A. Stephen and Sons Ltd., Linthouse, Glasgow, for the USSCo., the Kakapo was a replacement for the Kanna on coastal runs. She was launched by Mrs W J Jordan, wife of New Zealand High Commissioner in London, and was a successful vessel.
She was sold off in 1960 to Cia de Nav Victoria SA, Panama, and operated by Te Hu Shipping Co. Ltd., Hong Kong as Kakapo until 1964 when her ownership was transferred to Te Hu S.S. Co. Ltd. and she was renamed Teh Ping.
On 21st October 1970, she sailed to Keelung, Taiwan where she was scrapped.
