MV Koraki 1957-1984

The MV Koraki was a motor vessel built in 1957 by Alexander Stephen and Sons in Glasgow, Scotland. It was slightly different from the Union Steam Ship Company’s other “K-class” cargo ships, in that it had a larger beam than its predecessors. One of its more unique features is that the MV Koraki was the first New Zealand-registered ship to have fibreglass lifeboats.

After only 18 years in the USSCo’s fleet, the MV Koraki was sold to Malé’s Maldives Shipping Company in 1975 due to the success of roll-on, roll-off cargo services and changed handling practices. The ship was renamed the Maldive Ambassador, and later the Northern Sun.

In 1984, the ship was sold to Pakastan shipbreakers in Karachi and demolished.
