The TSS Kotuku was built in 1900 by Carmichael, McLean & Co and Russell & Company at Greenock, Scotland for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand Ltd (USSCo.), Dunedin. She was powered by a steam triple expansion engine of 3 cylinder giving 112nhp and 9 knots. The boat had accommodation facilities for 58 crew.
Apart from a brief time in Tasmania, Kotuku spent its whole time with USSCo as a collier (bulk cargo ship designed to carry coal). It worked primarily on the West Coast trading route in New Zealand. On the 16 May 1912 it was wrecked on North Tip Head, Grey River Entrance, Greymouth, while outward bound in fog. 28 people were on board at the time it was stranded, and a full enquiry was undertaken.
There are no plans held for this ship.
