The Maheno II was built in 1969 by Rob Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering in Dundee, Scotland for Union Steamship Company (USSCo). It was the first of two vessels completed in response to the success of the roll-on, roll-off services in Australia and along with its sibling ship the Marama II it operated a two-weekly cargo service from Auckland and Wellington to Sydney and Melbourne.
The Maheno sailed for USSCo for only 7 years as freight needs shifted rapidly and larger ships were needed. It was sold by the USSCo in 1976 to Thames Marine Ltd, Panama and its name was changed to Jolly Giallo. It was sold five more times. After a name change in 1980 to African Trader, it was again sold in 1985 Oyster Shipping Ltd., Gibraltar and its name was changed for a third time to June Lady. It was renamed Tierra Del Fuego and sold again in 1987 to Naviera Interoceangas S.A, Valparaiso, In 1991 it sold again to Co. Na. Tir SpA, Trapani, now called Carla E. In 2003 it sold to Princeton Shipping, Panama, and was renamed Santa Emma. It was sold for the final time in 2004 to Rikan Shipping Inc, Panama and its name changed to Santa.
The Santa sank on 6 October 2005 about 1000 km off the coast of Morocco while being towed to shipbreakers.
