TSMV Marama II 1969-1985

Propulsion: Twin Screw Motor Vessel

Due to the success of roll-on/roll-off cargo services in Australia, two specialist ships — the Marama and Maheno — were ordered to operate a fortnightly service from Auckland and Wellington to Sydney and Melbourne. The vessels were built by Robb Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Company in Dundee, Scotland. Although the Marama was delayed due to industrial action at the shipyard, it was completed in 1969. 

It has a length and breadth of 131 metres and a tonnage of 4510. The twin screw motor could reach 16.5 knots.

As a result of the growth of standard ISO containers, both ships had been replaced by 1976. Marama was chartered back by Union Company for the trans-Tasman service and also to the Pacific Islands.

In 1985, Marama sailed from Bluff to Kaohsiung. The ship arrived on 23 March and was sold to Taiwanese shipbreakers.
