Built in 1976 by Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., Whyallia for USSCo. for the trans-Tasman cargo service, mainly to transport the forestry cargoes from Tauranga. It was powered by gas turbine and capable of 20 knots. Along with its sistership Union Rotoiti these were the largest cargo ships built for the company.Stabilizers were fitted in Singapore in 1976. Equipped with a bow ramp and stern quarter ramp, these two ships incorporated the cargo lifts and other handling features of the Union Melbourne.
In 1998 it was sold to Indian shipbreakers at Alang and after having had the engines removed in Singapore, it was towed to Alang for scrapping, arriving January 1999.
