Built in 1958 by Alexander Stephen and Sons the Waikare was the second ship by that name owned and operated by the Union Steamship Company (USSCo). It served as a cargo ship on the Indonesian, Malaysian and Indian trade routes alongside the Wairata and Wairimu.
In 1965 it replaced the Waimea on the Melbourne route until the USSCo sold it to Maldive Shipping in 1975 and it was renamed the Maldive Sailor. Two years later in 1977 it was involved in a collision with the tanker Japan Daisy off Cape Comorin, India and was sunk.
