TypeOrganisationDate Range1997-DescriptionA Friends of the Wellington Town Belt was formed in 1997 with John Gilberthorpe, (a former Wellington City Councillor who chaired the Town Belt Management Plan Working Sub-Committee charged with preparing the Plan), as the Friends' inaugural Chairman. The Friends have focused their energies on several fronts, and whilst it maintains a sound working relationship with the Council, the Friends is fiercely independent and will remain so.
The Friends main efforts to date have been in two areas — campaigning to see the return of alienated lands such as those areas mentioned above and public education and awareness of the Town Belt's attributes and values. The Friends have organised many talks from specialists on different aspects of the Town Belt — it's history, native vegetation, recreation, and extensive pine plantations.External LinksRoyal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture
