On the 12th of February, 1909 the Union Steam Ship Company passenger steamer SS Penguin sank in Cook Strait. Weather conditions deteriorated while making the journey from Picton to Wellington.
Captain Francis Naylor attempted to maneuver the ship out of the worst of the weather but the ship collided with Thoms Rock and took on water. Violent seas meant that many of the passengers evacuated by lifeboat never made it to shore. Only 30 of the 102 passengers and crew survived.
