Incorporated 23 March 1996, Waterfront Watch made several petitions to Council and commissioned professional market research to survey Wellingtonians and after receiving 2,400 submissions from the public in opposition to Variation 17 in 2000, it was withdrawn by the Council.
Waterfront Watch was a member of the Lambton Harbour Community Consultative Committee (CCC) in the late 1990s.
The Society's vision was for Wellington to be an active, vibrant, public waterfront with stunning views.
The Society continued to be active into the late 2010s in response to 'plans to develop the waterfront constantly going against the public's wishes' and was ultimately dissolved in 2023.
