TypeAgencyDate Range1981-DescriptionThe Wellington Civic Trust was established as a charitable trust on the 7 August 1981 with the aim of making Wellington the best place to work and live in New Zealand by reflecting the people, culture and aspirations in the design of the Wellington city environment. The Trusts aspirations include the preservation of natural features of the city from the town belt to the harbour, cultural assets, and world class urban design.
The Civic Trust believe that it is important that everyone participate in discussion about decisions that affect the city. As an independent community organisation, the Trust engages in a variety of activities designed to inform, educate, challenge and evoke participation from a diverse range of groups including: local residents, tangata whenua, the commercial sector, City and Regional Councils, urban designers, architects, key agencies, and central government.
The main activities of the Trust are
- holding Annual Seminars on issues of concern in the city.
- developing policy positions on key proposals, making submissions and promoting these to decision-makers in local and central government.
- acting as an independent facilitator for inter-agency discussions on major issues affecting the development of Wellington.
- holding a biennial Award ceremony to honour developments that enhance Wellington (this started in 2002).
- maintaining a strong relationship with the City Council and lobbying for key issues, and
- producing publications including a newsletter and seminar reports.
