Hikitia, research files and records of Hikitia Heavy Lift Limited

Archives IdentifierDX001Date Range1980-2025DescriptionThis series consists of research files created by John Ackrill recording the work done by the Hikitia over her operational life with the Wellington Harbour Board, and records relating to the subsequent purchase and operation by Hikitia Heavy Lift Limited and the Maritime Heritage Trust.
The research files contain content relating to the work done by the Hikitia, and maintenance and restoration that was carried out. A lot of the information has been collated from archival sources, including copies of plans, operational documents and photographs. There are also newspaper clippings.
The files between 1926-1990 detail operations under the Wellington Harbour Board. They include extracts from the lifting logs (registers recording what jobs were carried out) followed by copies of material relating to those jobs. From 1990 onwards, as well as newspaper clippings, the files generally contain records created by Hikitia Heavy Lift and the Maritime Heritage Trust. There are also files relating to a specific subject; for example engineering or machinery details.
As well as the research files, the series includes annual financial statements for Hikitia Heavy Lift Limited; a day log recording work carried out, and a small number of photographs documenting events or work the Hikitia carried out.
