Originally founded in 1921 as the The NZ Retailers' Federation, it was reformed in 1987 as the incorporated society Retail and Wholesale Merchants Association, which rebranded to Retail NZ in 2015.

These records ended up at the Wellington branch of Retail New Zealand. This series of records are mainly minute books, two newspaper clipping books and a set of newsletters.

This series contains minutes for the below Wellington based retail groups:

- Retail & Wholesale Merchants Association of New Zealand Inc: Wellington Branch (1993-1995) and the Wellington Branch Wholesale Section (1965-1988)
- Wellington Master Grocers' Association (1945-1967) and (1977-1989)
- Wellington Wholesale Hardware Merchants Association (1957-1962) and (1977-1987)
- Wellington Wallboard Association (1976-1987)

Background to the Wellington Retailers' Association:
In 1943 the Wellington Drapers, Clothiers, and Boot Retailers’ Association, decided to change its name to the Wellington Retailers Association due to the widening scope of membership. In 1956 it had changed it's name to the Greater Wellington and Hutt Valley Retailers Association and in 1965 it changed its name to the Wellington Regional Retailers Association. The Wellington Regional Retailers Association was incorporated in 1984 and was disestablished in 1996.
