Archives IdentifierFL001Date Range1958-Circa 2010DescriptionThis is a series of Wellington Host Lions Club records. The Wellington Host Lions Club is a part of Lions Clubs International, a network of volunteers. The Wellington Host Lions Club has been operating since 1958.
Here is a list of some of their community based activities:
- Hosting a Magic Show annually for over 30 years which gives a free show for underprivileged children and with corporate sponsorship provides other charities much needed funds.
- Cooking at Ronald McDonald House for out of town families who have children in hospital.
- Outward Bound sponsorship for youth.
- Collecting reading glasses as part of the nationwide Lions project which sends unused glass to the Pacific Islands.
- Sponsoring Camp Quality for children suffering from cancer.
- Running the miniature railway train at Wellington Zoo.
Series includes: publications, minutes and correspondence; records of the Zoo train, which was run by the Lions Club at the Wellington Zoo; there are also records of the club's involvement with the campaign for Lloyd Morgan to become president of Lions Club international in the 1970s - which was achieved in 1979.
Lloyd Morgan was born in Wellington and helped found the Lower Hutt Lions club.
