Archives IdentifierFM001Date Range1940s-1960sDescriptionA set of black and white photographic prints made in the late 1990s by Graham Stewart of photographs he took from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is a curated collection of his work Graham wanted to donate to Wellington City Council Archives. Graham passed away on 23 January 2025 before he had the opportunity to transfer it personally, and the collection was transferred by Simon Woolf, a close friend of Grahams.
The collection is a small portion of Grahams work. The selection of images is based around the most popular mode of public transport at the time, trams. Electric trams started running in the central city from 1904, and by the 1910s the network extended across Wellington's suburban areas as well. They were replaced by Trolley Buses in 1964.
As well as featuring trams these photographs provide a record of Wellington at this time. They cover the central city area from Thorndon to Newtown, and there are also a number of photographs taken in suburban areas such as Kilbirnie and Brooklyn.MediumPhotograph - printSystem of ArrangementThere is no system of arrangement to the photographs.
