Wellington Botanic Garden

DescriptionThe Wellington Botanic Garden was established in 1868 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest botanic gardens. Management of the garden by Wellington City Council began in 1891. When the New Zealand Company established Wellington as a settlement in 1839, they advised the Surveyor General, William Mein Smith, to set aside land for a botanic garden. The Botanic Garden was established for three main areas of purpose: Government, science and recreation. The original area of the Garden was 13 acres. In 1874 the Wesleyan Reserve was added to the garden, comprising around 54 acres. After a number of adjustments, the area now in the Garden is 63 acres (25.5 hectares).
The Botanic Garden is part of the Town Belt*, an area of green land ringing the city, set aside during Wellington’s formative years, and has long been a peaceful sanctuary for Wellingtonians and visitors alike.
Since 1868*, when planting and development of the Botanic Garden officially started, it has provided a peaceful retreat for the citizens of this wind-swept capital. Conveniently located just minutes from the bustle of the CBD, the garden's picturesque landscapes, flowing lawns, water-features, and incredible range of flowers, all combine to instil a sense of peace on the observer.
Visitors frequent the gardens, particularly during the busy summer cruise-ship months, with convenient access provided by way of the world-famous Cable Car*. There are also access points from the Glenmore Street main gates*, and via Salamanca Road*, near Victoria University of Wellington*, so students and workers in the city can easily pop in for lunch, or use the gardens as a thoroughfare to and from work.
Music has long been an integral part of the history of the Botanic Gardens, with multiple requests made to the WCC for permission to use the site for Brass Bands, and other musical ensembles, dating back to the early 1900’s. This encouraged the erection of a Band Rotunda*, in an area known as “The Dell"* which was specifically set aside for musical performances, and later, the Sound Shell* was built in 1953. The annual WCC Summer City* events continue this tradition, with evening performances providing family entertainment during the warm summer months.
Other features and attractions on offer include; Tulip Sunday*, the Rose Gardens*, the Treehouse*, Observatories*and access to the Bolton Street Cemetery*.
