It became an incorporated society in 1989 and the members include gardeners, plants enthusiasts and former staff. The Friends endeavours to promote and support the development of the Botanic Gardens. This includes initiating projects, raising funds and fostering interest in its scientific, education, cultural and recreation functions.

The Friends main areas of focus include:
Advocacy and support: ensuring the Botanic Garden is well-funded and well-managed.
Guiding and Hosting: providing guides for tours
Events: organising and hosting lectures, film and other similar events.
Internal StructuresGoverned by a committee which is elected at the Annual General Meeting in August or September
