There are no extant indexes or registers of building permits issued by these authorities. This series comprises permits created by the Hutt and Makara Counties. Makara County was formed from the Porirua and Makara ridings of Hutt County in 1907. Permits held by the Wellington City Archives date from 1914; although it has not been fully researched, the earliest Building Bylaw traced so far is 1910. The records end in 1962, when Makara County rejoined Hutt County as Makara Riding.

The Hutt County Council permits cover the period 1962-73. It is assumed that these are the permits issued for the Makara Riding of Hutt County.
