Archives Identifier00178Date Range1951-1971DescriptionAt the beginning of their terms of office the Mayor and Councillors met and decided on the number and status of committees to be set up. The Mayor was an ex-officio member of all committees, with a small number of councillors making up the rest of each committee. Committees set the direction of work of Council departments, made decisions within their delegated authority, and referred to the full Council any decisions for which they did not have delegated authority.
The Town Clerk, or later the Clerk of Committees, was responsible for taking minutes and ensuring that they were inserted in the minute book, signed, and indexed. The minutes of Standing Committees are public documents, unless the committee has formally gone into closed session. The minutes of one off or ad hoc committees are not necessarily public. This committee dealt with transport, traffic, tramways, electricity and the airport.
