Archives Identifier00203Date Range1903-1940DescriptionThis series contains the minutes of the Board which oversaw maintenance of part of the Hutt Road between 1903 and 1940. The Hutt Road Act 1903 gave four local authorities responsibility for paying for the upkeep and repair of that part of the Hutt Road which was situated in Onslow Borough. Wellington City Council was designated as the constructing local authority, authorised to carry out the actual construction and maintenance work and to collect money from the participating local authorities to pay for the work. At the beginning, Wellington City Council, Onslow and Petone Boroughs, and the Lower Hutt City Council were required to share the costs involved in varying percentages. The Controlling Board was made up of the mayors of each of councils, with the Mayor of Wellington as Chairman and the Wellington Town Clerk as the Clerk of the Board. The Board met at irregular, quite widely spaced intervals. By the early 1920's, Makara, Eastbourne, Johnsonville and Upper Hutt had been added to the local authorities involved. Under the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Construction and Hutt Road Amendment Act 1924, the Board changed its name to the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board of Control with the same membership as before. It was taken over by the Main Highways Board in 1940, and held its last meeting on 29 March 1940.
