Archives Identifier00225Date Range1909-1961DescriptionThis series consists of the cremation registers for Karori Cemetery, from the date of the first cremations. This was also the first crematorium in New Zealand, and early cremations also include people who died in other parts of New Zealand where there were no cremation facilities.
Information includes name, sex, age, date and place of death, date of medical referee's certificate, date of cremation, method and date of disposal of ashes [including interment and niche numbers] and if the ashes were given to relatives, the name of that person.
Entries are arranged in numerical order of application for cremation. This numbering system is also used for the Authority to Cremate forms (see Series 00239).
Note that this series of registers ends in 1961, but a complete set of registers is held in the Sexton's office at Karori Cemetery, who also hold a database of all cremations. For information relating to cremations post 1961 it may be best to contact Karori Cemetery first.
