The register records the plan number, subject, type of plan (cross section, longitudinal, etc), delineator (drawer or creator) and the date plans were prepared. Not all information is recorded for every plan.

Items are numbered sequentially from 1923 until 1949. In that year the register appears to have been taken over by the Design Branch, and a new sequence commencing at '1' was begun. These numbers were prefixed by '20'. In 1951 the earlier numerical sequence starts again with plan number 11400. This continued until 1958.

In 1958 the register records two concurrent series - Architectural Medium, 'AM-1', and Architectural Large 'AL-1'. These series continue until 1964 and 1963 respectively.

Plans numbers are not necessarily chronological. The register commences in 1923 but lists plans as early as 1876. The register continued to be used until 1975. Some entries have been annotated to indicate transfer of items into other plan systems. Many from the main sequence have been transferred into the drainage 'D' series, or the stormwater 'SW' series.
