WCC, Bylaws of Wellington City Council (sealed copies)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00250Date Range1933-1989DescriptionThis series contains the official signed and sealed copies of bylaws, which include the signatures of the Mayor, another Councillor, and the Town Clerk. The seal of the corporation has been affixed. Bylaws must be signed and sealed in order to be valid. This requires that the seal of the corporation be affixed to the document, in the presence of the Mayor, the Town Clerk and one other councillor, who must also affix their signatures to the document. These official copies can then be used as evidence that the particular bylaw is legitimate in terms of legal process, should any questions arise. Municipal authorities are authorised to make bylaws by specific legislation, or through powers vested in the governor-general. The authority under which a bylaw is made is set out in the in the first paragraph of the bylaw. Bylaws may 'incorporate' other regulatory mechanisms, for example the Wellington City Consolidated Bylaw Amendment No 24 (Building), 1940 created a bylaw around the then- current New Zealand Standard Code of Building By-Laws, Parts I-VI. The general form of the bylaw includes the title, the date the bylaw came into force, what areas it applied to, whether it should be read together with other bylaws, what bylaws, if any, are amended, and which, if any, are repealed.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.25MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementchronologicalCollection TypeWellington City Council
