Tawa Borough Council correspondence files
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00290Date Range1946-1990DescriptionThis series consists of correspondence to, from, and within the Tawa Borough Council. The files document most of the decisions and activities that the Tawa Borough Council was involved in. They cover a wide range of information, from the works and developments undertaken by the Council to the more routine operation and regulation of the Council. File subject matter ranges from subdivision, building and encroachment, street works, water works, and drainage works; the financing and staffing of the Council itself, and relationships with other organisations. In addition to correspondence, the series also contains reports, plans, and photographs.
The bulk of the information dates from the establishment of the Tawa Borough Council onwards (in 1950 the Tawa Flat Town Board was formed; in 1954 this became the Tawa Borough Council). There is some correspondence relating to the operation of the Tawa Town Flat Progressive Association back to 1946; this appears to have been incorporated into the Borough filing system. In 1989 Tawa Borough amalgamated with Wellington City Council, and the bulk of the filing system was closed, with the exception of a small number of files that continued to be used by the subsequent Wellington City Council Tawa District Office and Service Centre (Series 00349).
The system is alphabetical and subject-based. It is divided into major subject divisions and listed alphabetically within these. There are also some files which do not fit into these major groups and are listed alphabetically together. Major sub-series (subject groupings) within the series include:
Development/Redevelopment Files
Election Files
Loans Files
Reserves
National Roads Board
Pensioner Housing Reserves
Sewers/wastewater
Staff
Streets
District Scheme files
Subdivisions
Swimming pool
Town planning
Water Supply
Wellington City Council
Wellington Regional Council
The majority of correspondence relating to subdivision records is filed in alphabetical order by the name of the applicant carrying out the subdivision. There is also a small number of files, particularly for large-scale subdivisions by commercial companies or the Crown, that are arranged by the subdivision name, for example the Redwood Subdivision. To help find correspondence relating to specific subdivisions a number of these files have been indexed to the subdivision level. Indexing includes the applicant’s name, address and the Deposited Plan number of the subdivision parent plan.Quantity (Linear Metres)17.5MediumFileSystem of ArrangementAlphabetical by subjectCollection TypeWellington City Council
