Archives Identifier00297Date Range1887-1901DescriptionThis series contains copies of the outwards correspondence from the Town Clerk to the City Surveyor from and from 21 March 1899 to the newly-created official, the City Engineer. It does not seem that this is a direct continuation of Town Clerk's outwards letter books (Series 00296) as only occasionally are copies of prior outwards correspondence to the Surveyor found on these volumes. It is not clear whether these two volumes are the survivors from a larger series or whether separate letter books were created only from 27 May 1887. A change or separation of office location, or quantity of correspondence could also account for the start of this series. Subsequently copies of outwards letter are found on the correspondence files. The fact that the last entry, 16 September 1901, ceases at v. 2, page 486, suggests that the series was discontinued then, possibly because copies of outwards letters were now being filed with inwards correspondence - see Series 00233. There are no regular cross references to related inwards letters. Entries addressed to the City Solicitor, v. 1, p.349-350 appear to be a clerical error. There is one entry, v. 1 p. 494, 24 April 1893 addressed to the Drainage Engineer - see also Series 00298. Very often they convey decisions and instructions from the Council or Committees. Many of the memos were written to accompany letters from the public received by the TC, or through the Works or other relevant Committees, and passed onto the City Surveyor / Engineer for action. They cover all facets of the CE duties relating to the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, roads and streets, water, drainage and sewerage, and to bylaws and breaches of them.
