Archives Identifier00299Date Range1889-1906DescriptionThis series consists of copies of the outwards correspondence from the Town Clerk to the City Solicitor, begun at a time when the Solicitor worked from his own legal offices. The letters and memos from the Town Clerk contain requests to the Solicitor for the preparation of legal documents - deeds, leases, contracts, bonds, election rolls, by-laws, and for legal opinions and advice regarding Council land and works on properties, buildings, street widening, etc., dealings with local businesses, central government bills and statutes, and claims against the Council. There is one volume missing in this sequence (April 1900-January 1902) and there are no volumes after 1906; it is not known whether they are missing or were not created. After January 1904 when the Solicitor was resident in the Town Hall offices there are noticeably fewer entries. Hand-written pencil annotations refer to page numbers of related letters, and tick or marks probably indicate entry into the index.
