It may have been started to deal with the additional correspondence created by special proposals in 1900 - 1901 to widen several major streets (Revans Street, Adelaide Road, Riddiford, and Willis Street, and others), as part of 'proposed improved communication with Newtown' (00166/12 WCC Minute Book p. 121-22, 31 May 1900). Special committees to deal with street widening were set up at various times since the 1870s - see Series 00164 It is not known if any prior volumes were created or are missing. A few initial letters are from the City Valuer, and then are signed up to the end of 1901 by the Acting Town Clerk, R Tait. It ends part way through a volume; copies of outwards letters were by this time being also filed with the inwards correspondence. After 1905/06 no separate 'Street Widening Committee' is listed and it seems that the Public Works Committee dealt with street widening. The letters reflect the discussions and decisions of the Street Widening Committee, and the legal and financial business of purchasing the whole or part of numerous properties, and the relocation or removal of buildings. They are addressed to those members of the public affected , that is, landowners in Wellington and absentees in other parts of NZ and overseas, their lawyers, and tenants. They show the involvement of the City Solicitor and the City Engineer in the street widening processes. The letters mention legal procedures, compensation payments, and inform property owners of decisions of the Street Widening Committee.
