This series consists of thirteen lists for varying areas covered by the Onslow Borough, some covering a three year period and with annotations over several years. The rolls vary in content and are headed with a variety of names: some refer to the relevant Acts, and some are named valuation lists, other rolls. For example: 1892 - 'The Land and Income Assessment Act 1891' Triennial Assessment for the period beginning 1892 ...; 1892/93 uses a form created for Wellington Wards; 1895-6 has just ' Valuation List ...; 1901 is headed with the Act: The Government Valuation of Land Act 1896 Valuation-roll ...; and 1905 also 'The Government Valuation of Land Act 1896, the Government Valuation of Land Amendment Acts 1900 and 1903., Valuation roll ..... .
After 1906 Wadestown joined with Wellington and rolls have sections and named crossed out reflecting this. The cover title and headings for the 1906, 1907, 1911 rolls also refer to the Acts and are annotated 'Continuation Valuation roll ... '. The 1906 roll is labelled Onslow Borough Drainage District ' with 'Hutt County' crossed out and most entries refer to Kaiwarra [Kaiwharawhara] area. The 1907 roll (volume 2 inscribed on cover) has annotations in red 'Wellington City' for Wadestown addresses. The cover label for the 1911 roll is stamped 'Wellington- Onslow Portion' (and inscribed Volume 3) and has many Wadestown names crossed through. The cover labels of the later volumes have the Crown crest at the top.
Most of the rolls are signed and dated by a valuer, those from 1901 onwards with a stamp and signature of a Government Valuer. The Valuation Department was established in 1896 and took over most local body valuations. The rolls after 1901 are probably the second copies of those compiled by central government and then given to local authorities.
The descriptive elements include
- the list/ roll number,
- owner name,
- trade or occupation and address,
- occupier name,
- trade or occupation and address,
- description and situation of land and its area.
Other columns vary. The first set for 1892 has a Land-Tax column subdivided with details of Interest, Improved value, Unimproved value, etc. This is missing from 1892/93 , 1896/96 which has a column 'If let, for what term...' . For 1901 onwards this is dropped and the value is dividied in Captial, Improved and Unimproved.
