Onslow Borough Council, Town Clerk's letter books of outwards correspondence
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00330Date Range1890-1919DescriptionThis series consists of 12 volumes containing copies of outwards letters from the Onslow Borough Council Town Clerk, and occasionaly from other officials. They begin 22 April 1890 with the formation of the Borough, and end 28 July 1919 when Onslow had already been under the control of the Wellington City since the 1st April 1919. Though the letters from April onwards are headed 'Wellington City Council, Late Onslow...', they are signed by H. Abraham, the Onslow Town Clerk.. Some volumes show the Onslow Borough official stamp at the top of each page. No inwards correspondence has been located. Some of the volumes have a number on the spine (2-7], but they are numbered as if the third volume in the series is number one. For a period, September 1898 to August 1899, the date range of volumes 3 and 4 (labelled 2] overlaps. There is no obvious reason as the content appears to be similar in both volumes, and both are signed by SCG Vickers, the Town Clerk. The letters cover the whole range of administration and operations of the Borough. Most are to residents, landowners and businesses, but some are to other Councils, especially Wellington, to essential businesses (such as Wellington Gas Co.) and to government agencies.
