Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00375Date Range1908-1958DescriptionThere are 14 surviving volumes and 1 index volume in this series. Missing are volumes 11, 13, and 15. Full title Chief Engineer's Office, Clerical staff Instruction book. These volumes contain memos, copies of extracts from minutes and notices relevant to the labour relations and work conditions of clerical staff - salaries and wages, appointments, transfers and retirements, leave allowances, holidays, and special events and celebrations. At first the entries are hand written and then mostly typed sheets pasted in. There is a separate index volume covering Books 1-15, and indexes at the front of volume 16 and 17. The books contain material of high personal and historical interest, especially about junior and non-professional staff who are often invisible in other documentation. Some items contain references to Town Clerk's and Engineer's files and may be duplicated on files, but these books are indexed and give a chronological overview. The books cover the periods of both World Wars, and there are lists of staff on military leave. A large number of entries in the volumes have a reference to the Engineer's Instruction Book (for example: Folio 331 E 23/3/29). These books no longer exist.
