WCC, City Engineer's Department Instruction books (Jeffreys, James, Burrell)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00376Date Range1932-1951 DescriptionThese instruction books contain specific memos relating to plans, designs, etc. They consist of copies of notices, memos, etc. pasted into volumes; the volumes are indexed, either by notebooks pasted inside front or back cover, and after 1971 using the last pages. They are grouped together as one series because, in spite of personal names on the covers, provide a record of the work of the Assistant Surveyor or Design Engineer, rather than any personal information: they continue from James to Burrell in one volume at the changeover date in 1964. The volumes cover a wide range of Works projects and concerns and some have references to departmental files. They have considerable evidential value for the history of the Engineer's office and provide a chronological summary of issues and projects over time - as compared to the general files which are subject based. Some of the issues appear minor, but can be a significant piece of administrative history - re buying and using a camera; in other cases the memos provide succinct summaries of meetings and issues about projects. They are well indexed and can be used as a starting point for research.Quantity (Linear Metres)1MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementChronological by date of memosCollection TypeWellington City Council
