WCC, City Engineer's Department's Contract Registers (multiple number system)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00381Date Range1957-1967 DescriptionThese registers relate to annual number contracts - as compared to the single number contracts in Series 00205. It is possible that repeating, lower cost, or less significant contracts were given these numbers (as compared to single, larger scale projects as found in Series 00205.) Entries for both types of contract numbers appear in the Contract Accounts books (Series 00384)
Arrangement: The contract entries follow a modified annual number system, which appears to start in 1957, 1/- being the prefix for the 1957/58 year. The contract registration number is a four-digit code, representing one area of the Engineer's Department work, sometimes fixed for many years, with the yearly prefix in front. The code sub-sequences each relate to different topics. They begin with 1000, 2000, 3000 (Districts), then 400 (Building Branch), 500 (Mechanical Branch), etc It appears confusing because after 1972/73 (8/- sequence), numbers 9/- to 3/- are omitted, so that 4/- represents year 1974. Unfortunately, 4/-, 5/-, etc. is also used again in the 1980s for 1984, 1985, etc as well. Not all numbers in the registers have entries attached.
The front or back-end papers of most volumes contain details explaining the registration system for each year. This system parallels the one used for Job numbers (see Job register below). Also see information on the allocation of numbers on CE file 00009:1040:50/1315. The first volume has an index at the back by type of work - Street works, Drainage, Waterworks, Building, Street construction. The last volume covers several years (1974-1978 with annotations up to 1985) and is more like an index than a register; it is divided into tabbed number segments - e.g., Cleansing 8/131 -170, Waterworks 171-180, etc. It has a final section 'Sealed contracts' with an incomplete sequence of single Contract numbers, 2341-2618 - see Series 205 Contracts.
Entries record the contract number, the name of the contractor, a brief description of the work, the job number, cost of work, cost of labour, date started, amounts of progress payments, and final payment and date. Along with the Contracts Accounts books and the general files, these registers provide a summary of the general Engineer's and Works Dept operations and contracts. These registers act as a summary for these types of contracts, as no originals have been retained.Quantity (Linear Metres)0.11MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementSee below.Collection TypeWellington City Council
