Archives Identifier00562Date Range1986-1999DescriptionThis series of records were used by the Clearwater Project office to administer and oversee the treatment and disposal of wastewater. The records contain information about the mid 1980s wastewater treatment decisions, Portals Water Treatment Limited (PWT), MacT Consortium and Anglian Water International (AWI). In 1990 a commitment was made by Wellington City Council to build a new wastewater treatment plant aimed at cleaning up Wellington's south coast, waterways and harbour. In November tenders were called and on 2 August 1991 a Letter of Intent was given to PWT. In October 1992 there was a Town Planning Appeal against the proposal. In September 1992 the MacT consortium put forward the alternative ValleyWest Scheme. The Cityworks committee voted against continuing with PWT contract. In February 1994 a new tendering process began. On 13 December 1994 AWI was announced as the successful tenderer. AWI signed a 25 year contract in February 1995. The contract with AWI marks the beginning of the Wellington Wastewater Project (also referred to as the Clearwater Project). The Clearwater Project involved the construction of two sewage treatment plants: a large one at Moa Point, and a smaller one at Karori (Western Treatment Plant). Other key parts of the system included a 1.8 kilometre outfall pipe (contracted to Candac Perry Joint Venture), a sludge de-watering plant at the Southern Landfill (Carey's Gully), and a new pumping station at Island Bay.
