WCC, Transport Department's maps and plans (PW or T series)
Descriptive Data
Archives Identifier00696Date Range1903-1970DescriptionThis series is the main plan system of the Tramways (later Transport) Department. It is arranged in a numerical sequence with either a PW or T prefix. The prefix does not relate to the date of the plan or subject matter and nothing has been found to explain what the PW or T prefix may stand for.
It is thought the system was started in the 1930s and many older plans from other plan series were renumbered into this system. Unlike the earlier combined plan system of filing (Series 00695) which was used by both the Tramways and Electricity Department, this series appears to have been used only by the Tramways Department.
A variety of different maps and plans are held in this series. Some of the more significant types of plans are as follows:
- Accident plans: These plans record a site plan of the area where an accident occurred and the details of the accident, such as where vehicles ended up, blood marks on the road and, in the case of fatal accidents, the position of bodies.
- Building plans: These are plans that are similar in format to those held in the Building Permit series. They include construction of new buildings and design of furniture.
- Equipment drawings: Equipment created or purchased by the department for the maintenance and expansion of the tram system.
- Route plans: These record the creation of new routes or changes to existing routes and stops.
- Track plans: These record the creation, expansion and maintenance of the track system used by the trams.
Vehicle drawings :Only a small number of these are held. They show the arrangement of seats, dimensions of cars and turning space required by the tram cars and buses.
To allow easier management of the series, Wellington City Archives have imposed a numbering sequence that runs within each folder. The original plan number has been recorded in the Other ID field.Quantity (Linear Metres)8MediumPlanSystem of ArrangementNumerical by Transport Department plan numberCollection TypeWellington City Council
