Wellington Harbour Board Berthing registers
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAC045Date Range1907-1990DescriptionThis series is a set of registers that give a daily record of which vessels were berthed in Wellington, and at which wharf.
The columns used to describe this information are as follows:
- Date
- Name of Vessel
- Berth
- Time of (Arrival or Departure)
- Remarks
The registers were used by the Harbour Department to keep track of vessels while they were in the Harbour Board’s jurisdiction. A vessel could be moved from one berth to another while still in the harbour, resulting in several entries for that vessel in a short space of time. The ‘Remarks’ column is used to note where the vessel came from (if ‘Arrival’) or where it was going to (if ‘Departure’).
There is one volume missing from the series (45/6) covering the period 1922-1925.
The information in these registers determined the appropriate wharf for each vessel to berth at, depending on that vessel’s needs and the current availability of berthages. The Harbour Master would then use this information in his Annual Report to recommend to the Harbour Board that more wharves be built as and when necessary.Quantity (Linear Metres)4.8MediumBound VolumeSystem of ArrangementChronologicalCollection TypeWellington Museums Trust
