It is unknown when this series of cards was originally created, but there are a number of cards held that record information back to 1880 when the Harbour Board was set up. If staff had worked in the port prior to 1880, then information on their previous service was also usually annotated.

The cards record such information as: Name, Date Joined, Birth Date, Position and Promotion, Department or Staff, Salary or Wage, and Date the rate of pay was altered. It also records if they originally started out as Regular Weekly or Casual Staff. The cards are also annotated with the date of when the person left the Harbour Board and why. On some cards, the date of death is noted for staff that had retired or resigned. If a staff member resigned but was then reemployed at a later date, a new card was created for them, so there may be more than one card for an individual.

References to files, letter books, minute books and other records may also be found on the cards.
