Wellington Harbour Board Personnel Cards for Permanent Staff
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAC054Date Range1880-1989DescriptionThis series contains staff cards for Wellington Harbour Board Permanent Staff. It is unknown when this series of cards was originally created, but there are a number of cards held that record information back to 1880 when the Harbour Board was set up. If staff had worked in the port prior to 1880, then information on their previous service was also usually annotated.
The cards record such information as: Name, Date Joined, Birth Date, Position and Promotion, Department or Staff, Salary or Wage, and Date the rate of pay was altered. It also records if they originally started out as Regular Weekly or Casual Staff. The cards are also annotated with the date of when the person left the Harbour Board and why. On some cards, the date of death is noted for staff that had retired or resigned. If a staff member resigned but was then reemployed at a later date, a new card was created for them, so there may be more than one card for an individual.
References to files, letter books, minute books and other records may also be found on the cards. Some examples of the more common references are: BCMBII/967 means page 967 of the Board in Committee Minute Book Volume 2 (series AC002) WAMBII/65 means page 65 of the Wharf and Accounts Committee Minute Book Volume 2 (series AC003) WHB 40/293 or WHB 45678 are references to files or correspondence in series AC020 8/5/3 is a reference to a file that formed part of series AC023 (these files may not be held by Wellington City Archives) XLVII/801 is a reference to Secretary's Letter Book Volume 47, page 801 (series AC019) this may also take the form of S47/801 References such as E/234, TM/2345, S/563, A/6456, HM/453 and M/453 relate to correspondence and notes in the 'Staff Changes' bound volumes in series AC025 The correspondence that these references point to can be about the specific staff member, or they may be something more general such as a recent pay raise for all Harbour Board staff with that job.Quantity (Linear Metres)1.33MediumFileSystem of ArrangementAlphabetical by SurnameCollection TypeWellington Museums Trust
