A sub-committee of the Karori Progressive Association was established, and were known as the Stewards of Wrights Hill. The group's objective was to see the establishment of a public reserve on the site and to assist with the regeneration of native vegetation. The group became the Wrights Hill Management Committee in 1987 and maintained an active programme of planting and the construction of tracks and paths. In 1990 the group changed its name to the Wrights Hill Reserve Committee, which in the early 2000s was updated to Wrights Hill Recreation Reserve Committee.
This group of volunteers started and managed the maintenance and native planting of Wrights Hill Reserve in Karori, developed a revegetation plan, and constructed the lookout.
