TypeAgencyDate Range1968-1974DescriptionIt is not certain when the water works function was created as a separate administrative unit but prior to 1966, the Waterworks Division was named the Waterworks Branch and was part of the City Engineer's Department.
The Waterworks Branch became the Waterworks Division in 1966. The controlling Department also changed its name and was called the department of Works and Planning. This department changed its title back to the City Engineer’s Department from 1969 until 1972, when it became known simply as the Works Department.
The Waterworks Division managed the bulk water supply and the water reticulation services, including the intakes at Wainuiomata, Orongorongo and Karori, and the Gear Island artesian wells. It also acted as administrator for the Wellington and Suburban Water Supply Board and operated a testing laboratory for the Council.
In 1973 a new board was established, the Wellington Regional Water Board, and the Waterworks Division continued to act as its agent for the bulk supply work. In September 1974 the bulk water supply functions and most of the staff of the Waterworks Division were transferred to the Wellington Regional Water Board. This planned, operated and maintained the Wellington City distribution system as agent for the Council.
The maintenance of the City reticulation mains, pumping stations, service reservoirs, and the laboratory remained with the Council under the Drainage Division.
