- Land taken by the council for street widening
- Subdivision schemes
- Encroachments
In 1968 City Planner (or Town Planning Department) was established as a new department of the Council. Five divisions were set up under the City Planner, of which the Land Development Division and the Town Planning Division were responsible for Survey work.
In 1988 the Council's Land Development Division amalgamated with the Town Planning Division to become one division called the Survey Branch. The Survey Branch carried out survey and regulatory work, including providing a survey service to all Wellington City Council Departments. The main part of this work was concerned with District Schemes, subdivisions and encroachments. Specific working relationships within the Town Planning Department itself were with the Administration, Development Control, Architectural, Traffic Management and Forward Planning branches. Working relationships with other council departments were with the Town Clerk, City Valuer, Works, and Legal department.
The Survey Branch's functions were described as being to:
1. Ensure all subdivisions are designed in the most economic and efficient manner, in the public interest in accordance with legislative requirements.
2. Ensure all encroachments are in both the public and private interest, are processed quickly and monitored.
3. Provide land information services to the Council and public in hard copy and electronic forms.
4. Provide a survey service to all Council departments.
In 1992 Wellington City Council established a new structure with 8 divisions, of which the Environment Division is one. Survey task were taken over by Survey and Land Information Service of the Environment Division.
