Launched in 2020 by Mayor Andy Foster, the first short story competition theme was ‘150 years’ to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of Wellington City Council. Authors were invited to write stories that explored either in fiction or non-fiction an event that took place in the first 150 years of Council. The competition opened in December 2020, with entries closing January 2021. Four young writers were recognised in two categories in 2021. The first competition was called the "Mayor of Wellington 2020 Annual Story Competition" later becoming an annual APW event.
The theme for 2022 was The City of Wind. It asked young people to look at the love-hate relationship people have with the forces of nature. Almost 40 entries were received for the 2022 competition, with entrants from around the Wellington region ranging in age from nine to 18 years.MediumFileSystem of ArrangementChronological by year and by award categoryExternal LinksAho Tini 2030: Arts, Culture and Creativity StrategyAbsolutely Positively Wellington Short Story CompetitionCollection TypeWellington City Council
