Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards replaced the Civic Awards (which were established in 1986) with the first APW award being awarded in 1999. From 2001, a citation was read out during council meetings before the award was presented, typically by the Mayor.
Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards are a way for the Council to honour members of the community who have made outstanding or lengthy contributions, usually in a voluntary capacity, to the capital and its people.
Past winners of the award include those who have saved and restored historic buildings around Wellington including the Embassy Theatre and Randell Cottage. They celebrate those who have installed public artworks, set up public events and film festivals, volunteered in their communities and established community groups to lobby for change. They acknowledge those who have stepped up during natural disasters, given hours of free service and organised coastal clean-ups. The awards recognise bloggers, cyclists, artists, fashion-designers and business people.
In 2017, the awards became an annual event with a formal ceremony to honour the recipients, a format which continues today.
