He initially worked as a teacher, before being appointed as Deputy Chief Library (later known as Deputy City Librarian) at Wellington Public Library from 1933-1946. In 1946, he became City Librarian. He retired in 1973.

He was an active member of the New Zealand Library Association, including a stint as the organisation's President from 1952-1953.
