New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company Ltd, correspondence
Descriptive Data
Archives IdentifierAG001Date Range1936-1941DescriptionA large portion of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company Ltd records held at the Wellington City Archives are correspondence files.
These are generally well-organised, but there appear to have been several classification systems run simultaneously.
There are several alphabetically based sub-categories. In these subcategories, the individual folders are named to indicate the subject of the correspondence contained. A broad subject title has been applied at some point, either by a previous archivist based on information no longer kept with the records or based on perusing the material and categorising it themselves. These titles include: General Correspondence, Amusement Park Correspondence, Sundry Correspondence, Cleaning and Caretaking, Furniture, Insurance, Concessions, Traffic Transport and Carparks, and Electric Light and Gas Services.
These useful titles have been maintained to increase accessibility and appear before the comma in the item title. Like the previous system, the title of the folder is named to indicate the subject of the correspondence.
There were also a number of adjacent folders containing smaller correspondence related material that falls outside of these subject runs and therefore are presented by their folder name only. Though they have no title category or correspondence sub-category, their inclusion in this series should indicate their format.
Specimen forms (blank versions of standardised materials like tickets, bulk correspondence forms, etc) have also been included in this series because they physically fell in the middle of the correspondence files.MediumLoose papersSystem of ArrangementTwo artificial numbering systems have been partially applied to the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company Ltd records during processing at an earlier time. The most consistent of these is a basic numeric system - possibly indicating physical proximity of the records at time of boxing. These numbers have not been used as Item IDs and should be disregarded for access purposes - the digital records for these items have been given new consecutive numbers starting with 1 for each series created and the physical folders are not labeled with these new numbers. The container number and title listed in the digital records for each folder should be used for retrieval. A small subset of the General Correspondence folders were found out of order and fall at the end of the series.
