The bulk of the collection consists of glass plate negatives identified as being taken by Charles William Martin, founder of the eponymous electrical and plumbing business opened in Wellington in 1900. A wide variety of subjects feature, including family scenes, images of the Wellington Naval Auxiliary Volunteers and bowling club events, as well as images relating to the electrical and plumbing business, including electrical switches, prototypes and building work. There is an accompanying set of copy prints, which is not complete.
The locations and people in most of the images are unidentified, but the Martin family lived in Newtown and Melrose and addresses in these suburbs are mentioned. Other locations named are Scorching Bay, Athletic Park (Newtown) and Fort Ballance. There are also images taken in Croydon, Surrey, England, where Charles had family.
Ephemeral content includes items such as the school books of Charles' son Hector, cabinet cards brought over by the Martin family from England, material relating to membership in the Newtown Bowling Club, Trinity Methodist Church, Tutenekai Lodge and the Wellington Naval Auxiliary Volunteers. They have been listed as three separate boxes in the order they were processed. There is an index book that gives further information about the glass plates.
