Following a meeting of a small group of local residents interested in establishing a historical society covering the three bays, a public meeting was held on Wednesday 13 August 2003 which attracted 32 supporters. Those present confirmed their support for the Society, and an inaugural committee was elected to incorporate the Society.

The Southern Bays include Houghton, Island and Owhiro Bays. Group holds quarterly meetings at Island Bay Baptist Church, produces a quarterly newsletter and an annual magazine.

Collects family histories, histories of organisations past and present, such as churches, schools, clubs in general, sporting bodies, social groups. This collection is held at the Island Bay Community Centre.
