The fourth ship in the Union Steam Ship Company's (USSCo’s) AC class, the TSMV Kaiapoi, was built by Henry Robb in1949. As with the Kaitawa, the Kaiapoi served as a coastal coal carrier out of the West Coast. Although the ship nearly met a similar fate to the Kaitawa only a month after the disaster, the Kaiapoi served the USSCo reliably for 19 years before it was sold it to E K Litonjua Steamship Co Ltd in Manila and renamed Eddie K L.
The Kaiapoi continued to sail for another five years before being sold to Continental Shipbreaking Co Ltd in Hong Kong. The ship was demolished in 1973.
